Marussia on the lookout for 2014 engine supply
Wednesday 27th February 2013, 18:58 by TF1T Staff
Marussia have confirmed that they are on the lookout for a new engine supplier for 2014 in the belief that current supplier Cosworth aren't building a new engine to meet the new regulations.
The sport will switch to 1.6 litre turbo-V6 power units next season at a significant cost to the engine manufacturers.
PURE, a start-up led by Craig Pollock, has already suspended its programme in light of the costs involved, and it's believed, according to Marussia CEO Graeme Lowdon, that Cosworth will pull out too.
"My understanding is that Cosworth won't be making a 2014 engine," said Lowdon during a FOTA fans' forum. "Obviously I don't work for Cosworth, but that is my understanding.
"The three suppliers [in 2014] will be Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari."
It has been rumoured that Honda may return to the sport as an engine supplier in 2014 after showing an interest in getting involved once again. However these claims remain unconfirmed despite Renault's Jean-Michel Jalinier believing their customer base may reduce because of a greater number of suppliers.
"That's why the number of our customers will fall in the future, because there are more competitors [arriving]," he told Motorsport-Total.
