McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has admitted he would welcome Lewis Hamilton back at any time, even as early as 2014.
The 27-year-old will end what has been a successful 14-year relationship this weekend after agreeing a move to Mercedes for 2013 on a three-year deal.
Hamilton has likened the move to "almost like leaving home and going travelling for a bit," after admitting he will always consider McLaren to be his home.
That prompted Whitmarsh to concede that he would "have him back," adding, "so let's hope it's just a gap year."
The 2008 champion was quickest in both first and second practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix as he hunts the "perfect farewell" gift for the team.
