Sky Sports will approach Bernie Ecclestone at the end of the current season with the idea of widespread 3D coverage in the not too distant future.
The company currently holds the commercial rights' to broadcast the entire season live in the United Kingdom, and has already introduced several new features during its first year including HD coverage.
Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports F1, confirmed the company's interest in expanding their 3D coverage to include F1.
"We would love to do it. 3D would look sensational for F1," Francis told The Times.
"It will be on the agenda for the conversation we have at the end of the season with FOM."
In a further development, he suggested Sky would be interested in taking over the worldwide production rights from FOM should Ecclestone's company be open to the idea.
"Would we take it on and do it? We would challenge ourselves to do any sports production," he added. "It is a hypothetical question and would need FOM to suggest they don't want to do it any longer."
